How to sleep with a pregnancy pillow
A pregnancy pillow is not used like an ordinary pillow, and the first two or three nights are about finding the movement. Here is the position, the one motion that changes everything, and the mistakes that come up most often.
The starting position
Lay the pillow on the bed, opening towards the foot of the bed. Slide into it as you lie down on your side, head on the closed curve. You should end up surrounded: one arm in front of you, one behind.
- The front arm takes your bump and your folded knee. It carries most of the weight.
- The back arm holds your back and stops you rolling backwards in the night.
- La courbe replaces your head pillow.
Set the height of your knee before you fall asleep: your thigh should rest level, not drop towards the mattress. That is what lines up your hips and keeps your lower back from feeling tight in the morning.
The move that changes everything: pivot without leaving
This is the part nobody explains, and it is the whole difference between a pillow you keep and one you put away after a week.
When you want to turn over, do not leave the U. Pivot your body on the spot, inside the pillow. The arm that was holding your back becomes the one holding your bump, and the other way round. The pillow itself does not move.
That is exactly what a stack of pillows cannot do: there, every change of side means pulling the whole arrangement apart and rebuilding it half asleep. A night in pregnancy holds several of those wakings, and each one costs you the time it takes to fall asleep again. Give it two or three nights and the pivot becomes automatic.
The mistakes of the first nights
| Erreur | What it causes | The fix |
|---|---|---|
| Adding your usual pillow on top of the curve | Your neck pushes forward, you wake with a stiff neck | The curve of the U is the pillow. You do not add a second one. |
| Resting your knee beside the arm | Your hips twist, tightness in the lower back | The knee goes onto the arm. |
| Sleeping with it straight out of the packaging | Pillow still flat, support disappoints | Lay it out flat in the morning, use it at night. |
| Climbing out of the U to turn over | You wake fully, everything has to be repositioned | Pivoter inside. |
| Placing it too high up the bed | Your feet hang off, the back arm holds nothing | The opening should reach mid-thigh. |
The first night, in practice
The pillow travels vacuum-packed. Take it out of the packaging à plat as soon as it arrives and give it a few hours to regain its volume. Of the 129 written reviews we went through, 18 women mention this wait: it is not a fault, it is the trade-off for a box you can actually carry. Unpacked in the morning, it is ready by the evening.
Do not go looking for the perfect position on the first try. Settle in, sleep, and adjust the height of your knee the next day. Most women describe real comfort from the second or third night, once the movement has settled in.
When you share the bed
This is the question couples ask most, and almost nobody answers it. A U takes up roughly half a full-size bed once you are in sleeping position. Two simple adjustments help: turn the opening towards the outside of the bed rather than towards your partner, and shift four to six inches towards your own edge. The back arm then acts as a divider, which a lot of couples end up appreciating. The measurements are in our guide on how much bed space it takes.
After the birth
The same pillow changes job. Sitting down, set it around your waist with the opening facing forward: the arm supports the forearm carrying your baby, at chest height. You are no longer holding that weight unsupported for the whole feed — which is what tires the shoulder on long sessions. If feeding is your main use, a dedicated model will be more compact.
Entretien
The cover comes off by the zip and goes in the machine on a cold cycle, then air-dries. The pillow itself does not need washing if the cover is washed regularly: air it for a few hours now and then, and shake it to redistribute the filling. A pillow whose filling has settled to one side is recovered by that shake, not by a wash.
Our U-shaped pregnancy pillow is built for both of these, with a removable washable cover and three colours. You have 30 days to try it at home: that is how long it takes to know whether the movement suits you.
