U-shaped or C-shaped pregnancy pillow?

One question decides it: do you turn over during the night? A U has two arms, one in front of you and one behind, so you pivot inside it and nothing moves. A C has one arm, so turning means lifting the pillow over and settling it again. If you sleep on one side all night, a C does the job in half the room. If you turn, the U is the one that saves you the rebuild.

This gets asked in seven different shapes, which usually means nobody is answering it properly. Below is what each shape physically holds, the question that settles it in ten seconds, and what to look at once you have chosen a shape.

What each shape holds

ShapeSupportsTurning overRoom it takes
U Back, bump and knees at once You pivot inside it — nothing to reposition The most: about half a full-size bed
C One side at a time: bump and knees, or back Lift it over and settle it again Roughly half a U
Straight body pillow Front or back — not both Reposition every time The least

The U is a single continuous volume. That is its whole point: a stack of ordinary pillows does exactly the same job until the moment you move, and then it comes apart. A C keeps its shape too, but it only covers one side of you at a time.

The question that settles it

Do you wake up on the same side you fell asleep on?

If yes, a C is enough, and you gain the room a U would take. If you do not know — and most women in the second trimester do not, because turning happens half asleep — assume you turn. Waking to rebuild a setup is the thing pregnancy pillows exist to remove, and it is the subject that comes up most in our reviews: 43 of 129 written reviews talk about sleeping comfort, ahead of every other topic.

There is a real trade-off in the U, and it is space. Ours takes roughly half a full-size bed once you are in position. Our guide on how much bed space it takes gives you a way to test that at home, with pillows you already own, before ordering anything.

The V shape is a different object

A V-shaped pillow keeps coming up in the same searches, and it belongs to another category entirely. It props you sitting up — head and shoulders — for reading, feeding or recovering. A U-shaped pillow is for lying on your side and supports your whole body.

They are not alternatives. Some women own both, for opposite moments of the day.

Once you have picked a shape

Three things decide whether a given pillow is a good one, and none of them is the brand:

  • Firmness. Press your palm into the middle of an arm: it should sink about an inch and a half (3-4 cm) and then push back. Sink to the fabric and it will be crushed in a week; barely move and it becomes a pressure point under your hip.
  • A cover that comes off completely. This is what decides how long the thing lasts. Twenty of our 129 written reviews bring it up unprompted.
  • Length. The opening should reach mid-thigh when your head is on the curve. Too short and the back arm holds nothing.

Our five criteria guide goes through all of them in the order that matters.

Common questions

Is a U-shaped or C-shaped pregnancy pillow better?

It depends on one thing: whether you turn over during the night. A U has two arms, one in front and one behind, so you pivot inside it. A C has one, so when you turn you have to lift the pillow over and reposition it. If you sleep on one side all night, a C is enough and takes less room. If you turn, only the U saves you the rebuild.

What is the purpose of a U-shaped pregnancy pillow?

To hold your back, your bump and your knees at the same time, in one continuous piece, so that turning over does not dismantle your setup. Stacked pillows do the same job until you move; the U keeps its geometry.

Are C pillows good for pregnancy?

Yes, for a side sleeper who stays on one side. A C supports the bump and the knees, or the back, depending on which way you face it — one at a time. It is lighter, takes half the room, and moves from bed to sofa easily.

Are body pillows good for pregnancy?

A straight body pillow supports your front or your back, not both, and nothing holds it in place. It is the cheapest option and the one you will reposition most often. It works if you mainly want something to hug.

What is the difference between a V-shaped pillow and a U-shaped pillow?

A V-shaped pillow is designed to prop you up sitting — reading, feeding, recovering. It supports your head and shoulders. A U-shaped pillow is designed for lying on your side and supports your whole body. They are not alternatives; they solve different problems.

Which U-shaped pregnancy pillow should I pick?

Judge the shape, not the name. Three things decide: firmness that gives about an inch and a half under your palm then pushes back, a cover that comes off completely for washing, and a length that lets the opening reach mid-thigh. Anything else is decoration.
